Jupiter + Dumfries Lands

You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re looking at a new estate agent’s shop, but on closer inspection you realise you’ve started checking out the town’s latest exhibition.
Jupiter + has installed award-winning ceramicist Lindsey Mendick’s work in the Loreburne Centre. It’s free to visit, Thursday to Sunday until 6 December.
Jupiter Artland is one of Scotland’s leading art galleries. Set in the Lothian countryside, its collection of 40 sculptures within rolling parkland is one of Scotland’s most noted art collections. So what’s it doing in the Loreburne Centre?
Tucked away in the middle of the Loreburne Centre, the green unit blends into the background: pictures in the window and a digital collage like so many estate agents. But look closer. The pictures are stained glass, cracked and holed. The details in the collage: the smiles have braces. The Bacardi logo lurks ominously, innocently. Inside you find eight ceramic houses, each cracked open and erupting with handmade ceramic representations of teenage life: from cigarettes and discarded bottles, to trendy trainers and hoodies. Ceramic slugs and snails slither over the sides. It is the work of the award-winning ceramicist Lindsey Mendick, installed in a fake estate agency.

The installation is supported by a 30 minute documentary film following Mendick around her childhood home of Muswell Hill, expanding on the themes of her art and delving into the powerful story it tells.
Free workshops next door
Next door is the Jupiter+Nation learning studio, where free creative workshops will take place, exploring the work, its themes and offering people the chance to get hands on with clay, collage and digital techniques. The aim of Jupiter+ is to remove the barriers of access by bringing world class artworks and learning experiences to the heart of Scottish towns. I’m glad Jupiter Artland opted for Dumfries and look forward to other touring exhibitions setting up shop in town in future.
